Stay Healthy During the Winter Season

February 2, 2018

As we are all well aware, the start of 2018 has been full of cold weather, germs and sickness! If you are like me, you are counting down the days until spring blossoms and 60 degree weather. Unfortunately, Punxsutawney Phil’s shadow reared its ugly head and we could be stuck with this lovely pattern for six more weeks. Since there is nothing we can do about mother nature, I figure it’s best to grin and bear it and do whatever I can do stay healthy and fit during these next few weeks of cold and flu season!

When it gets cold outside, we tend to stay inside, which sometimes leads us to slack on our diet and exercise routines. Maintaining proper diet and exercise routines is essential to ward off illness keep ourselves fit and healthy while we patiently wait for the days when we can step outside jacket free!

Here are some easy ways to keep you healthy and fit during the winter season:

  1. Add omega 3 fatty acid- According to Pinnacle Health, “omega 3 fatty acids are a healthy type of fat that are naturally found in many food types including fish, plant seeds and nuts. Omega 3 fatty acids are great for reducing joint pain and stiffness as they are a natural anti-inflammatory. Studies have also shown that omega 3 fatty acids help lower levels of depression, which people commonly feel during the shorter days of winter.”
  2. Eat more fiber- Soluble fiber helps reduce cholesterol levels, aids in weight loss and is a great way to decrease inflammation and boost immune system function.
  3. Boost your vitamin C- Research has shown vitamin C to be one of the most powerful immune boosting vitamins available. Vitamin C can be found in oranges, orange juice, broccoli and in other fruits and vegetables.
  4. Cook with spices- Onions, ginger and cilantro not only bring flavor to your favorite dish, but they are also shown to help improve immune function. Turmeric helps to combat inflammation and is a powerful antioxidant. Garlic has been shown to be an immune booster, killing off several types of bacteria and viruses.
  5. Avoid overdoing it on refined flours or sugars- Too much white sugar and flour will not only contribute to weight gain, but can also crash your immune system. Instead of products with white flours or sugars, substitute breads and baked goods made with whole grains and natural sweets such as fruit or fruit juice.
  6. Workout at home- If you just cannot head outdoors for your workout, fit in a workout at home! There are so many resources online for fun exercise videos and routines.
  7. And always remember- Drink plenty of water and WASH YOUR HANDS!!

I hope that you all stay healthy and fit this winter...and that Punxsutawney Phil is wrong this year!
