Promote Healthy Eating

PAL was founded to address the root causes of chronic disease by promoting physical activity. Over the years, communities across the country, including Spartanburg, began to shift towards a holistic approach to community wellness. Healthy eating and active living work best together to decrease risk of chronic illness and increase overall health.

Increased access to healthy food:

Foodshare Spartanburg

PAL convenes the Eat Smart Move More Spartanburg County coalition. The coalition, led by PAL, supported the expansion of FoodShare Spartanburg in recent years. The growth of FSS dramatically increased access to local healthy produce across the county and that growth continues.

Food System Coalition

The Spartanburg Food System Coalition is housed at PAL and its mission is to strengthen all aspects of the local food system, increase access to healthy food, and address food-related issues in Spartanburg comprehensively.

Healthy Cooking Classes

Through the National Healthy School Program from Healthier Generation, PAL has supported many local schools to implement practices that encourage students to choose healthier foods. School garden programs, healthy snack policies, and promoting fruits and vegetables at school meals are some of the ways our schools are educating kids about nutrition.

The Spartanburg Food System Coalition, led by PAL, began exploring the development of a community food center in 2020. Across the U.S., food centers or hubs are supporting local farmers and increasing access to fresh foods for residents.
