Resolutions

January 18, 2016

This year has opened with a bang.  I for one know that I was already sprinting through the gate and into the new year before the ball even dropped on December 31st.  I’ve barely had the time to look around and appreciate where I am, and what’s happening.  Which brings me to my point, this is the first year that I haven’t taken the time to make even one resolution.  Which when you look deeper into that says a whole lot about me thinking that everything is going great, and there isn’t anything I need to fix.  Well we all know that we could all improve in some way or another.  It could also possibly be telling me that I need to slow down, and be introspective enough to see when I could be doing something better.

As I took the time to ponder my new found awareness I came to the realization that perhaps New Year’s resolutions might not have to be all about one’s self either.  What can we do in the community to make things better?  I feel as though we all have a social responsibility to try and improve the lives of those around us.  Through my year of service in AmeriCorps I’ve learned that doing even something small for someone can completely change their life.  If we all made the resolution to do one thing for someone else just once a week, that’s 52 things in a year that impact someone else.  You never know what your one act of kindness will do for someone.  It could be as simple as filling up their bike tire with air, and that could become that person’s way to get to work, which allows them to be able to pay rent so their family has a warm place to sleep at night.  Imagine the world we’d live in if everyone took the time to do something for someone else.
